What Is Tramp Oil?
In metalworking and manufacturing plants, tramp oil is the catch-all term for any unwanted, non-soluble, hydrocarbon-based oil that ends up in a coolant, washwater, or process fluid system. It is not part of the coolant formulation itself. Instead, it arrives from elsewhere in the operation, machine lubrication systems, hydraulic circuits, or the raw stock being machined, and mixes into fluid that was never designed to carry it.
