Understanding and Treating Depression
Depression is a mental state of low mood, often characterized by a loss of interest or pleasure in activities. While there are several subtypes of depression, major depressive disorder is the most commonly recognized. It is a significant global health concern, projected to be the leading cause of disease burden worldwide by 2030. The term major depressive disorder was formally introduced in the 1970s and included in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM) in the 1980s.
