The teaching of French at the University of Nairobi begun in the 1960s when the University still operated as a constituent college of the University of East Africa. Engaged in the Kenyanisation/Africanisation process of those independence years of the 60s, the then newly created Department of Literature took the initiative of introducing the teaching and learning of the French language for the purpose of gaining access to the huge body of African literature in French.
