A third generation Briton settled in India, he was born in Kasauli, on May 19, 1934 and studied in Shimla. He has worked in London but prefers to stay in India. Settled in Mussoorie since 1963. He did a stint as editor of imprint.1995 nominee for the Hans Christian Andersen award, Holland. Sahitya Academy Awardee. He won his first award, the John Llewellyn Rhys Prize, a British award at the age of eighteen for his novel, A ROOM ON THE ROOF.
