The blowout preventer (BOP) is meant to close off subsea wells if oil and gas in the deep seabed starts discharging. The blowout preventer uses the series of rams, shearing and valves for this purpose. The failure of the blowout preventer was the cause of the Gulf of Mexico oil spill over.
