Even though several states have passed laws to prevent patients from receiving unexpected charges from unknowingly visiting an out-of-network doctor or facility, there are no federal protections for patients who were steered the wrong way. Many of these people have been charged exorbitant amounts of money for doctor visits and medical procedures, and many people probably think that there is nothing they can do about these bills they did not sign up for nor can they afford.
